The Pollax Girl
Taranaâs hand covering her mouth, her eyes shut tight, and her heavy robe covering every inch of her body kept her from screaming. But with every passing eye, she nearly passed out in sheer panic. The carriage was not gilded or decorated in any fashion. She did not want them knowing who she was. Her garb was plain, her feet clad in commoner boots.
If her father could see her now, he would be furious. He raised her to be better than this, had taught her every lesson to make her a lady of nobility and splendor. But this was not Tralin. This was not her fatherâs city. This was the horror of Creeg, and Creeg had back alleys teeming with garq. This city was a nightmare. She hated all of it. She longed for her castle and her guards.
She looked at the one man she had brought and her hopes rode high. He was beautiful, with a handsome face and pristine armor. He was reputed to be well above average with his sword and knew how to talk and bow. He had obviously been brought up in a noble setting, and made her feel safe in a tertiary way. It was all she could hope for.
The streets were loud, louder than she remembered them ever being before. She did not want to see them, but the racket kept her peering out the curtain to see if the citizens were rioting. Every time she saw the people milling around outside, she thought she would faint. She pounded on the ceiling and shouted to the driver to move faster but to no avail.
âWhy does he spare the horses?â she hissed. âWe need to get there. I do not want to be out here.â
âThe streets are filled with rabble, Tarana,â the Wizard Teal said. âHe can only go so fast.â
Tarana looked to the guard and sneered at Teal. âI have asked you to call me Queen or Your Majesty.â
Teal said nothing. He simply looked out the curtain, opening it far too much and showing her more of the streets than she wanted to see. âWhen we get there, we will be safe,â he said.
âDo you think we can order them to clear the pub?â she said.
âIf you show them who you are, Iâm sure they will shove all the patrons out into the streets. The towns folk will be angered, butââ
âNo, Teal, we do not want to anger anyone. It will be fine. Tell me again why this healer will not leave the bar she has holed herself into.â
âShe fears for her life. She is the only remaining member of the Pollax family,â Teal said. âIâm sure you can imagine how she feels.â He laughed at this, and Tarana wanted to have him beat.
How had she let this man get such a hold on her? This would not do for long. She needed to reach this healer. When that was done and swoops had been taken from her, she could punish him for all his atrocities.
